Mata Mandir Singh began the study of Gatka back in the late 70’s on the roof of the guesthouse next to the Golden Temple in Amritsar with Master Ram Singh, and has studied with many and various teachers since, both in Punjab and the west.
He pioneered teaching it in Europe beginning in 1984 at the Yoga Festival in France and was integral to the initiation of the International Gatka Federation. Although proficient in Hapkido, Kung Fu and karate , Gatka is the only martial art that he still practices and teaches. Yogi Bhajan sent him to India to study Gatka and music told him personally that Gatka is a “Shakti Yoga” and that it builds the aura to be as strong as steel. In Mata’s own words, “The best martial art is the one you never have to use.” He is also a teacher of a type of kirtan called “Bir Ras”, the essence of courage, which uses mantra to build the inner steel, focus, and one pointedness necessary to the spiritual warrior.
Mata Mandir Singh of the most famous musicians from the times of Yogi Bhajan. He has over 20 cds, many of his songs are specifically used in Kundalini yoga kriyas and meditations, as appointed by Yogi Bhajan. (Check out his discography in Spotify)
